Introducing Our New Doctor Tara Tweg, DC

Photo: Doctor Tara Tweg, Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)
My name is Dr. Tara Tweg. I was born and raised in Toronto. I have been practicing Chiropractic for over 20 years in Australia and Ontario.

For the last ten years, I have predominately been dealing with patients that have been injured in motor vehicle accidents. I recently became certified by the American Medical Association in Impairment Ratings.

I practice a combination of Diversified, Activator Technique, Trigger Point Therapy, and S.O.T. (sacro-occipital technique). S.O.T. is so named because of the relationship between the Sacrum (base of the spine) and the Occiput (base of the skull). It uses wedge shaped blocks to realign the spine. There are only a few certified practitioners of S.O.T. in Ontario.

Cranialsacral massage was derived from Sacro-Occipital Technique. This is a gentle form of body work appropriate for evaluating and treating a wide variety of soft tissue and neurological issues for newborns, children, and adults.

I prefer to diagnose and identify the cause of a problem, address the root of the trouble, and not merely treat the symptoms. People who suffer from headaches/migraines, back pain, jaw pain, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome, stiff necks and other joint pains can all benefit.

I look forward to working with you to achieve your health goals at The Art of Life Community Health Centre.

Successful Pain Management and Treatment of Pain: Part 2

Managing and Curing Your Pain
The Epoch Times: B3 - Health, Dec 16 - 22, 2010

Managing and Curing Your Pain

Interferential Current Therapy (IFC)
Do you experience your back as a hard uneven surface with lowered muscular elasticity reduced neck and shoulder range of motion and highly painful trigger-points? Alternately, you may suffer from sciatic nerve inflammation or some other neuromuscular pain. You probably will not find any better therapeutic solution for these conditions than 3D Interferential Current Therapy (IFC). The innovative methodology of IFC provides a rhythmical shift in interferential field causing a significant anti-inflammatory effect by penetrating into a very deep cellular level. This state-of-the-art equipment provides a great number of specific therapeutic programs that are selected for different purposes, among these are sedation therapy, myokinetic activation, pain reduction, stimulation of blood circulation, stabilization of the vegetative nervous system, and local anesthesia. Acute patients are actually able to feel results just after their initial treatment!

Furthermore, certain cases of partial muscle paralysis or muscle degenerations and reduced join functioning have actually been cured with use of the interferential current therapy making it one of the most effective electrotherapy at the present time. Interferential current therapy (IFC) has the potential to restore muscles contracted over long periods of time, as well as inflamed ligaments damaged by long-term squeeze of the peripheral nerves. IFC stimulation is not only a revolution in the treatment of chronic pain but our therapists, at the Art of Life community health centre, believe that this effective therapeutic stimulation is the best method to pain relief in the treatment of a spinal cord injury or a neuromuscular affliction.

Far Infra Red (FIR)
Another therapeutic technology offered by our therapists is called Far Infra Red (FIR). This modern healing technology was developed by Japanese scientists and it is based on the ancient principles of the IR rays’ absorption by our body providing natural (somebody could say ecological) relief from long-term pain. Knowing whether a problem is in a chronic back or neck pain, migraine, rheumatoid join pain, a complicated or improper-healed bone fracture, fibromyalgia, a discomfort of eczema or psoriasis, all of these problems can be treated with our FIR medical equipment.

Radial Shock Wave Treatment (RSWT)
And last but not least, if you suffer from salt deposits and tendon calcifications, if you have painful spurs in your joints or a frozen shoulder or, if you experience a painful “trigger point” reaction, you will no longer need a surgery procedure to correct these problems. There is an innovative therapeutic technology, providing a non-invasive, outpatient alternative to surgery, called Radial Shock Wave Therapy (RSWT). The medical application of RSWT for the treatment of the trigger points provides amazing results. This effective technology utilizing high-energy, short wavelength sound waves, called shockwaves, was invented by Swiss engineers for fast and effective post-traumatic rehabilitation of Olympic athletes. The RSWT therapy has been used in Switzerland with great success for more than 10 years, and recently, the RSWT treatment has been introduced at the Art of Life Community Health Centre for the cure of our patients. With taking advantage of the Radial Shock Wave therapy any of these problems could be cured for only three sessions of five to ten minutes each.

Studies of the Radial Shock Wave Therapy show:
  • The success rate of this treatment is up to 80%, greater than of surgery.
  • Most patients feel no pain during the treatment, and practically complete pain relief is observed within eight to ten days after the treatment.
  • RSWT therapy does not require the use of anesthesia during the procedure.
As we mentioned before, this technology is based on utilizing high-energy acoustic waves and is similar to a non-invasive method which currently being used in urology practice for breaking up kidney stones. However, the use of the ultrasonic wave in the radial direction makes the procedure much more comfortable.

The Radial Shock Wave Therapy works both mechanically and chemically, and it allows the human body to use its own healing mechanism by stimulating a process of regeneration of new and healthy cells and evacuation of the sick cells in the affected areas of the body. As a result, the RSWT therapy has been known to help speed up the healing process tremendously.
The Swiss DolorClast® medical device is one of the many other options available to our doctors and therapists to diagnose and help you to cure the root of your pain.

We Want to Help You to Eliminate Your Pain
Pain can make you feel like a convict “being chained” to your disease. If you have been suffering from severe chronic pain for months or even years then a precise diagnosis and treatment is an essential key to your freedom from pain and for your future well-being. At the Art of Life centre all of the described treatments are combined with naturopathic and homeopathic practices, as well as particular types of medical and sports massages. Our uniquely designed full treatment plan that combines a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment will help you to not only eliminate the pain, but also causes of the illness itself.

Successful Pain Management and Treatment of Pain: Part 1

The Art of Life Community Health Centre
Managing and Curing Your Pain
The Epoch Times: B3 - Health, Dec 16 - 22, 2010

Managing and Curing Your Pain

Regrettably to say that almost 30% of all Canadians experience chronic physical pain. The more deeply the problem progresses, the more our social and physical activities suffer; eventually this reflects on our career and income. Despite these facts, most of the time we don’t even go to the doctor! Little by little we give in to the pain, changing our life style accordingly, learning how to avoid painful activities and movements. We resort to pain killer several times a day just to obtain relief for a couple of hours. Unfortunately, in this way we pollute our bodies with harmful toxins, which in the long term will double the pain we might otherwise experience.

Role of Pain Management
It is a well-known fact that the body does not represent the organism with random messages. Every body sensation has its own natural function and goal – in case of pain and discomfort, that goal is to attract our attention to a site which needs our immediate help. Pain is an S.O.S. signal, a warning signal of danger that needs to be heard and correctly interpreted. Clearly, then, our attempts to ignore or suppress the pain are not very practical.
What is the role of pain management? The ideal situation would be to alleviate the cause of the myriad pain symptoms and syndromes. In the face of today’s lifestyles and habits, this can be a complex issue; however, there are many new aspects in research and development of therapies which can change the way we treat and manage our acute and chronic body pain.

The Art of Life Community Health Centre
We at The Art of Life, Toronto’s non-for-profit community health centre, intensely study comprehensive pain management technologies from Canada, Europe, Japan and Israel. With the frequent acquisition of newly-developed equipment, the great team of our therapists is able to offer to our patients state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies and equipment that in combination with naturopathic and homeopathic practices, modern physiotherapeutic machines, as well as with unique types of medicinal and sport massage will not only just manage your pain but also, it will cure your problems and as a result, pain will disappear.

Back and Shoulder Pain
As an example, let us take a look at back and shoulder pain. Virtually every individual of any age, occupying any one of thousands of careers, working at a desk and especially, in front of a computer for the whole day, as well as participating in various sport and physical activities, is likely to suffer from periodic or chronic back and shoulder pain would benefit from professional health care. This pain could originate from many sources: an old injury which was never treated, a recent strain on an already weak or damaged muscle, even broken bones that were not healed properly. Other possible causes may include damaged vertebrae, hernia, muscle contraction, ligament or fascia inflammation and calcification, to name a few.

Disk Degeneration or Spinal Hernia
Do you have disk degeneration or spinal hernia? A new generation of physiotherapeutic equipment based on a very low frequency pulsating magnetic field combined with the newest infrared technology (880 nanometers (nm)) shows extraordinary results for these diagnoses. This dual action delivered by the Combitron (combined magnetic biostimulation and infrared rays’ device) provides a whole spectrum of achievements. It will halt the ongoing inflammation process or degenerative disk changes in your vertebrae. Moreover, it will stimulate the detoxification of the affected area and promote regeneration of new and healthy issue. According to a recent study, anti-inflammatory effect of healing with the Combitron is several times faster than any other type of low-frequency electromagnetic therapy. In most cases, at the same time the symptoms of pain are considerably reduced or completely eliminated after just two treatments as the afferent signals from peripheral tissue causing the pain are being blocked.

In our next article we will help you to find relief from chronic pain using other therapeutic solutions of The Art of Life Community Health Centre.

Developing Healthier Relationships with Your Children

This ten week workshop is about developing our leadership skills. It is a step by step process where upon completion you have the opportunity to create your own Family/Life plan.

This program when put into practice is guaranteed to facilitate dynamic and transformational shifts for the family.

"A Teacher affects eternity,
He/She can never tell where
their influence stops."
Henry Adams

So now you may ask who falls into that category of "Teacher". Of course, our first thought by definition is our classroom teacher. Then, there is the parent, the grandparent, the aunt or uncle, the babysitter and the next-door neighbor.

We are hearing this term more and more often,
"It takes a village to raise a child."
We know, however, that any caregiver who plays a role in the development of a child is considered their teacher.

The changing paradigm includes creating an environment where both you and your child are comfortable to learn, to share, and to be. It is about being a good watcher, listener and facilitator. It is about giving as well as receiving.

"Teaching" is about creating a practice, which includes the development of the mind, body and spirit. In the development of a life practice, we look to incorporate, a self-practice, a learning practice, a practice that nurtures positive relationships. and a practice of following our intuition.

The new picture is about understanding the role the body plays (a sensory experience) and the role the mind plays, (thoughts and interpretations of our senses), the role that spirit plays, (decision making and discernment regarding who we are as unique human beings and what we are here to accomplish).

"Teaching" is about developing structure, organization and setting limits. It is about adapting our teaching/parenting/management style to the temperaments and learning styles of our children. It is about acknowledging the art and science of learning and to get to know our students unique interests and abilities. It is about seeing ourselves as counselors, guides and motivators based on the information that they tell us about themselves.

"Teaching" is about working to get a better understanding of who we are, learning to look inside and work with those things that block our abilities to achieve our goals and look for the ways that will nurture our relationships with our kids.

Each and every time we learn something new about ourselves and put it into PRACTICE, then we are becoming more effective teachers.

This is "EMPOWERMENT" and this is who we are as "TEACHERS".

"...Simply speaking, to be a Parent is to take on the most challenging job the universe has to offer. Parenting is all about “life,” and what is “life” but something that just happens at any moment? Well, the same is true for our kids, who are experiencing “life” just as we are. The BIG difference is that now they are happening to all of us and “life’ is now affecting what we call “a family.”

The Art of NIA Dance

The Art of NIA Dance with Jane

Her father was a legendary healer. Her mother was a great and artistic beauty. In Nia, Jane has found her place in her generation and community.

She was dancing in utero, reports her mother. As a child, she was invited to study with the little boys and girls at the Royal Ballet School in London, England, but preferred to stay at home in Toronto to train. As she matured, her body departed from the standards required by the National Ballet, and she spent years nursing dance injuries and grieving the loss of her greatest hope. Later, as a career schoolteacher, she was instrumental in bringing Dance to the Ontario school system as a secondary credit course. She has since served as Head of Dance at the prestigious Claude Watson High School for the performing arts, and authored a pedagogic textbook for teachers of dance in Ontario.

Enter Nia…..Neuromuscular Integrative Awareness…..the merging of magic, music and medicine into a single alchemic practice. Nia embraces all aspects of holistic, systemic movement, delighting practitioners and changing lives.

While in her forties, Jane found a Nia class in her local community centre, and began to study, train and teach in realms she had only imagined. Currently she has achieved the highest level of teacher training, with the earning of a Nia Black Belt in July of 2009. Her classes synthesize music, movement, kinaesthetic mindfulness, sensory awareness, and poetic readiness; she explores both form and freedom with her students, who come in search of fun, fitness, healing, self-knowledge, and community.

Jane’s students meet every Thursday evening for a class at 7:30 pm. Classes finish with silent personal reflections on world, community, and calendar events. Recent themes have included self-love, vision, flexibility, and the nature of giving - all evolving from mindful, transformational dance. Thus, lively movement is taken inward to influence the neurochemistry of daily experience, thus healing mind, body, heart and spirit. Jane calls this The Work of Nia, and it is being done all over the world.

"Love is in the air", she smiles. "I love all my classes, and my Art of Life Nia sessions are really special for me."
