Youth for Kids: Classical Music for All Ages

Did you ever find yourself seating at Roy Thomson Hall, enjoying a spectacular classical performance thinking about how you would later try with mere words to convey something so remarkable and inexpressible? How you wished then to share this inspirational moment with your children, friends and family... especially, the children, so that the next generation would be just as inspired as you were at that moment. Inspired to live, to create, to reach for something greater... Have you ever wondered about how it all started for those remarkable talents that pull thousands of people into a massive hall magically transformed by their music? It started with the little decisions you and I make every day: a smile, a word of encouragement, even mere presence.

“Youth for Kids” is a Classical Music Charity Concert, hosted by the Art of Life Community Health Centre, featuring young talents who may one day transform entire music halls into harmony. Wouldn't you want to see how it all started?

The performance will feature young talented students of Faculty of Music from the University of Toronto: Martina Myskohlid (Soprano), Artun Miskciyan (Piano), Jessica Nunes (Clarinet), Jonathan Poenn (Cello), Charlotte Alexander (French Horn), and Evelina Zoubareva (Soprano).

Join us for Nia Class!

Nia is a sensory-based movement activity, celebrating the harmony of body, mind and spirit expressed through the joy of movement. Nia incorporates philosophy and body movements of the most advanced Eastern and Western arts, including dance, martial and healing arts. It is based on joy, empowerment, self-awareness, mental clarity, emotion balancing, self-harmonization and self-healing!

Nia is designed for everyone! You do not need any experience in dance, fitness or martial arts to enjoy Nia and benefit from it. There are three levels of intensity in Nia dances, so that you can jump and dance in whatever way your body chooses. It is ageless and limitless, transformational and effective for all people everywhere, from athletes, dancers and fitness instructors, to children, special needs groups and the elderly.

During this session, we will dance together, laugh together and build a connection with each other, our inner self and the world around.

The class will be facilitated by Martha Randall, Nia Black Belt holder.

Some info about Martha:

Martha is one of the leading Nia teachers in Canada. Martha’s 35 years of experience as a movement artist and teacher ensures that the classes and training sessions she leads are thoughtful, energetic and playful.

Throughout her movement career, starting with her formal dance training at York University, Martha has studied and performed an eclectic range of dance forms, including modern, ballet, contact improvisation and Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Sacred Rhythms. She has also studied Tai Chi, Karate, yoga, and clowning (with Mump & Smoot’s John Turner).

Martha’s teaching venues have included: SoulPepper Theatre’s Youth Outreach program, Second City’s educational division, the Toronto Board of Education’s Conference for Music and Drama teachers and the Haliburton School of the Arts Expressive Arts Programme. She has also volunteered Nia classes at Gilda’s Club – a support service for women with cancer. In 2013 she led the One Billion Rising flashmob at the Gardiner Museum on February 14 to support Eve Ensler’s initiative to stop violence against women and girls.

We are VERY happy to have Martha here with us for this class and hope you all can make it!
