Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Course with Sabina Pillai, MA
Instructor: Sabina Pillai, MA
 About Our Instructor:

Sabina Pillai has a Master’s degree in Clinical and Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto and has worked in mental health research and counselling for over 7 years.
After experiencing the powerful impact of mindfulness meditation in her own life, she was compelled to learn and teach the science of mindfulness.
Currently, she counsels a diverse set of clients in the city of Toronto, using mindfulness as the basis for the positive growth work she has been able to do with her clients.

About Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program:

Mindfulness is the meditative practice of non-judgmental attentiveness to our experience in the present moment. It focuses on developing two fundamental skills: awareness and equanimity. Awareness is the ability to concentrate attention on what is going on right now, whereas equanimity is the ability to remain calm and relaxed in the midst of any stressful situations. Sounds simple yet very much applicable to daily life situations!

Since we are most of the time occupied by our memories of the past or worries for the future, we don’t have the power to experience the present moment to our full capacity, concentrating all of our mental, emotional and physical skills to get the best possible 'outcome of the moment'. However, the presence of mindfulness can completely change our life, and changes are noticeable almost immediately.

Being rooted in ancient practice, the positive effects of mindfulness meditation have lately also been recognized by the scientific community. Mindfulness has been used to help people cope with daily life stressors and a wide range of health issues including cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune system disorder, depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD etc.

While the science endorses its supportive role, we, at the Art of Life Community Health Centre, approach mindfulness as a way of life. What we are working towards goes beyond the typical sitting meditation practice. Rather, we are aiming to cultivate a mindful way of living that helps us to engage more fully with life by changing how we relate to our external circumstances and internal experiences. This ability to balance our lives can happen through consistent practice and support from others who are also on this journey.

We invite you to begin the learning process towards mindfulness and experience a way of effectively coping with the stresses and thriving despite all of life’s challenges.

The Art of Life Community Health Centre has been committed to using integrative approach to improving our patients’ physical, emotional and mental health. Aiming to merge the art and science of positive growth and healthy living, we are offering an 8-week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction course taught by an experienced instructor, Sabina Pillai, M.A.

This 8-week MBSR course will help you to:
  • reduce your reaction to stress,  help to fight anxiety and depression;
  • decrease your level of body tension, pain, and suffering;
  • enhance your memory & concentration skills, patience and  personal performance;

Introduction to the 8 Weeks Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program

The program consists of 8 sessions, lasting between 1.5-2 hours and focuses on letting go of resistance towards life challenges and building resilience to stressful stimuli.

What does really cause pain in our lives? Most would think that it is something happening around that negatively affects us (that nosy neighbor on the street, that car that run me over today, that government increasing taxes, etc.)

But mindfulness states the opposite: what actually causes stress and pain in our lives is a resistance!

Have you ever wondered how it is like to live a life without resistance? Can you only imagine being resilient to physical pain, or that unpleasant feedback given at work, or that painful word said to you by a family member? It is all possible!

Mindfulness can help us drastically change our stereotypical/conditioned reactions to the outside world and bring joy to our relationships.

Current research on Mindfulness shows evidence that this practice can not only reduce stress, but also change the brain "wiring" and help people become happier!

Check out this brief video on Mindfulness and research done by Professor and neuroscientist Richard Davidson.

Managing ADD without Medications. Is It Really Possible?

"Essentially when you spend a lot of time meditating, the brain shows a pattern of feeling safe in the world and more comfortable in approaching people and situations, and less vigilant and afraid, which is more associated with the right hemisphere."

Mindfulness and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

When it comes to child behaviour, including how children should initiate, respond to and participate in learning and play activities, there is no universal guide and playbook. However, in the current age, it seems like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) have become commonplace terms attempting to pin complex child behaviour into a psychiatric definition. When did we start identifying certain child behaviour as problematic, and moreover, when did we turn a behavioural problem into a medical one?

A child, having a sensitive and rapidly developing brain and personality, should be approached with the utmost care, gentleness and calmness. All children and teenagers require a stable, nurturing and safe environment to experiment and sometimes act out their grievances at the world, at themselves, peers and parents. Hence, we have to be very careful not to try to push medications and therapies, striving to get rid of unwanted behavioural characteristics.

The modern health community recommends a combination of counseling, life style change and medications to manage ADHD symptoms. However, will the approaches proposed by mental health organizations effectively transform these behaviour issues into positive behavioural outcomes, or just suppress natural but atypical development?

There is, however, a much more gentle, non-invasive, non-interfering tool available to children and their parents, without any long-term side effects, but only life-long benefits: Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy!

Meditation Science

Mindfulness-based Meditation derives from the ancient Buddhist tradition of meditation and has been adapted specifically for ADD/ADHD youngsters in the form of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy.

By sustained effort and regular practice, participants fall in to a state of non-judgmental awareness of the inner and outer world. This is a much-desired, advantageous position from which many struggles lose their intensity, bringing in clarity and ability to face the world, without over-stressing the consciousness, brain and nervous system.

The more this ability improves, the better we will be able to glide through the storms of life. And this is accessible to any human being of any age through Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction therapy – MBSR.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Therapy

The physical benefits are numerous, as the body thrives much better when the mind is at peace. Functional MRI scans of the brain have revealed that “when you spend a lot of time meditating, the brain shows a pattern of feeling safe in the world and more comfortable in approaching people and situations, and less vigilant and afraid.”  [Source: sfgate.com: Stanford studies monks' meditation, compassion: Medical research]

When it comes to helping children with ADD/ADHD, the responsibility lies with parents to stretch all of their cognitive and intuitive faculties in order to really understand the underlying causes of their children's actions.

Mindful parenting is a form of mindfulness training and is defined  defined by Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction founder Jon Kabat-Zinn as: "paying attention to your child and your parenting in a particular way: intentionally, here and now, and non-judgmentally" [amazon.com: Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting, by Myla Kabat-zinn and Jon Kabat-Zinn, 1997].

Mindful Parenting

In Mindful Parenting, parents learn to pay attention to their children non-judgmentally, increase awareness of the present moment with their child, and reduce automatic (negative) reactions to the child (Lehtonen and Bögels, submitted) [Source: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov: The Effectiveness of Mindfulness Training for Children with ADHD and Mindful Parenting for their Parents].

This training will help parents bring in more patience and understanding into the relationship with their children, creating a more peaceful and stable home environment.

Meanwhile, through specialized mindfulness training, children will be learning to focus and self-regulate. There is no doubt, that the benefits increase tremendously when parents and children practice mindfulness together.

The pressures of daily living — a busy schedule, the demands of work, inadequate family or personal time, not enough rest, environmental challenges — can lead to a life thrown out of balance, a disturbance of our natural equilibrium.

More than 30 years ago, Nikken founder Isamu Masuda recognized that wellness depends on recognizing and sustaining what he named the 5 Pillars of Health® — Healthy Body, Mind, Family, Society and Finances. A balanced approach to living strengthens each of these pillars, and results in a more satisfying, healthy and rewarding lifestyle. Nikken offers you the means to attain this balance, through Nikken products and the Nikken business opportunity.

Air Wellness® Technology
Air Wellness Technology combines multistage filtration (including a state-of-the-art ULPA filter), negative-ion generation and a unique system that operates without producing ozone, a toxic gas that is an unfortunate byproduct of other air systems. Only Air Wellness products offer all these features in combination.

Far-Infrared Technology
Nikken Far-Infrared Technology features specially-made, ceramic-reflective fibers that absorb energy from multiple sources — sunlight, room temperature, body heat — and reflect that energy only within the far-infrared range of the spectrum. It's a solution that provides gentle, natural warmth yet releases excess heat, to afford comfort at all times in a wide range of ambient conditions.

Negative-Ion Technology
Negative-Ion Technology — also referred to as Ionic Comfort Technology in some Nikken products — makes use of materials or processes that produce negative ions, which are charged oxygen atoms or molecules. High amounts of these ions are found in certain settings, such as forests and near waterfalls. Scientists have long studied the relationship between negative ions in the air and human comfort.

Full-Spectrum Light Technology
Full-Spectrum Light Technology approximates sunlight and is used to supplant conventional artificial lighting, which can provide only a partial and uneven portion of the normal spectrum of light waves. Research suggests that exposure to full-spectrum light may be effective in helping maintain natural circadian rhythms, the cycle of sleeping and waking. Other benefits include a reduction in glare and flicker effect as well as decreased energy requirements.

Kenzen® Wellness Organic-Based Nutrition
Nikken Kenzen Wellness Organic-Based Nutrition is designed to bring the daily diet closer to nature. Each ingredient in the program is carefully selected and where possible the organic content is maximized. The Nikken concept of Whole Body Renewal includes a Core System to help meet daily needs, and modules that offer support for specific biological activities: gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, neurological, immune, skeletal.

PiMag® Water Technology
PiMag Water Technology begins with a high-tech, multiple-stage filtration system based on natural materials to clean water without chemicals. It adds Nikken magnetic technology and ceramic elements that impart minerals to produce pi water, known in Asia for decades. The result is a unique water system that is more environmentally sound, more cost-effective and more practical than commercially bottled water.

"As you gradually free yourself from stress, you become healthhier, more resilient, confident, happier.

Mindfulness - the Art of Living in the Moment

    So what actually is mindfulness?

Mindfulness means paying close attention to our own everyday experience; to all that we see, smell, hear, taste, touch, think and feel.

Mindfulness was developed in many cultures, over thousands of years, and has been effective in bettering the lives of countless people. The skills of mindfulness are easy to learn.  Like learning to drive a car, our first attempts at being mindful are hesitant and as we progress we do it naturally. By learning to do this, we become more precise about, and open to all our experiences, large and small, pleasant, unpleasant and neutral. Gradually we discover that we experience life in a new way.

Mindfulness does not ask us to believe in anything.  All we do is attempting to live in the moment. The more we practice living in the moment, the more we able to do it!  It gives us a feeling of freedom and ease.

By learning techniques that anybody can do, we radically change the way we experience our own mind, body, emotions, our pleasures and pains, our relationships, etc.  We gradually open more fully to our life and discover how deeply fulfilling it is.  We become happier, more focussed, skillful, and compassionate.  We become better able to love and help others.

Mindfulness can be especially helpful to those who experience anxiety and depression, chronic pain and illness, cardiac disease, the demands of caregiving, life threatening illness, grief, spiritual emptiness and difficulty finding balance in current lifestyles.

Mind/body approaches work because they go beyond the physical to address the framework of habits and behaviors, i.e. neuropaths that impact our health. They teach individuals to break old and harmful cycle of stress-anxiety-physical tension-symptoms-disease and develop the new healthier behaviors.

    Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program

We, at The Art of Life Community Health Centre set up the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program - a series of eight Mindfulness workshops conducted by Lou Carcasole, B.Sc, M.B.A, M.Ed for more than 5 years ago. Lou started his own Mindfulness training in 1987 with teacher Shinzen Young, an American meditation teacher and a Buddhist monk. Lou began teaching Mindfulness in 1996and since then he has taught Mindfulness to thousands of people in the Toronto and GTA area.

In 1999, Lou trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, the founder and director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and he learned about the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program). Based on Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn's renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction program, Lou began measuring results as objectively as possible, in attempt to quantify changes occurring as a result of the practicing Mindfulness. The results have always been positive, almost always impressive, and sometimes spectacular.

    New Mindfulness Programs

This year along with the MBSR program The Art of Life offers Mindfulness-Based program for teens, which suffer from different health & psychological conditions (including ADD/ADHD) and would like to improve their lives.

We also offer a new course “Parenting could be difficult – Mindfulness can help!”, recognizing the hard work and not easy life of some parents.

    Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workshops

The workshops will include discussion and practice of mindfulness. There will be time for questions and answers.  There will be suggestions for mindfulness techniques to use between workshops; at home or at work, while going for a walk or waiting for a doctor's appointment. Objective results measuring will be conducted at the end of the course.

All programs framed in a 8-week course will start in a week after an Open House at The Art of Life CHC, 885 Don Mills Road, Suite 121, Toronto M3C 1V9 (Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East, entrance from Wynford Dr. and Gervais Dr.).

Most of the courses will take place on Tuesdays at different times although another day/time possibilities are negotiable.

Suggested cost for new students - $300. For students who have completed previous the Art of Life Mindfulness courses - $150. No one with financial difficulties will be turned away; those who couldn't afford the fee they pay what they could afford for the course.

    Dear Friends and Guests,

We would like to thank all the people who have attended our Open House events for the last four months. We are really grateful to all of them.

More and more Torontonians are interested in our lectures about the naturopathic and the newest physiotherapy treatments, aura diagnostic, and other healing programs. Over the coming months, we will publish notes and articles about the most popular topics from our lectures.

Our guests already specified their interest in different topics of lectures in our School of Healthy Living. We even can give you a promise that one of the following meetings will inform us about the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromiology.

I would like to remind you that our doctors never talk about any problem without giving the most effective solution to resolve it. The Body-Mind-Spirit programs are created the way that they are the best options to help patients during the treatment sessions and in prophylactics. We have already launched our fall sessions, and we invite you to visit our centre in order to survive in a spring mood through the winter season.

You are always welcome to come with us to the journey to the real art of life.
